Everyone Cries on The Bathroom Floor… Right?

You may have seen the photos from my recent NY and DC trips, where I went to take the Financially Wise Women message bi-coastal and share my financial planning knowledge on CNBC. So often on that trip, I stopped to pinch myself because I was so grateful to be living my dream.

But it wasn’t always this way.

In fact, it was just in April 2013 that I wanted to give up.

I was sobbing on the bathroom floor. My tax bill was more than $10,000 and I didn’t have the money to pay it. I was only five months into starting Financially Wise Women, and I’d poured every ounce of myself into my business, including my personal cash cushion and emergency funds. I was physically, emotionally and spiritually exhausted, my personal relationships were suffering, and I felt like I had nothing left to give. I had no choice but to surrender to a divine plan much bigger than my own and ask for even more help from those around me.

That day in April was a moment I will never forget. The next day, my dad took me to lunch and told me exactly what I needed to hear. That I was stronger than I realized, that I was not a quitter and that I would get through this challenge. Then he said, “Britt, one day you’ll laugh as you recall this moment in your journey.”

He was right. Since then, I’ve had many moments where I laugh in pure joy, thinking about all that I’ve overcome in order to turn my business dreams into reality.

Of course, I still cry and I still have my lows—but I’ve realized that with every obstacle comes an opportunity for a breakthrough.

Our financial lives are the same way. We have moments of defeat, wondering how we’ll ever pay off all that debt, save enough for a home down payment or retire comfortably. Then, right when we think our hard work and dedication aren’t paying off, we wake up and realize we’ve turned our dream into a reality.

As you continue on your own financial journey, cherish those bathroom-floor moments. It’s not easy, but if you don’t you’ll miss out on experiencing the highs on the journey, too.

Financial planning is about more than just money. It’s about your life and how you choose to live it, and I want to help you.
